Demi Moore Ate Here…the Birth of a New BBQ Joint ATL

No kidding.  Demi Moore ate at arguably the best little BBQ Joint in Atlanta yesterday and you’ve never even heard of it.  I present to you (raise your mug here.) … DBA Barbecue!

Your taste buds welcome here!

Brand spanky shiny new, DBA Barbecue is tucked away in a neighborhood shopping center on Virginia Highland. Let me start by saying that I usually can’t stand barbecue restaurants because most of them can’t hold a candle to what I can do with several pounds of meat and a smoker.  I emphasize the word usually in this case.  The Mrs., so ridiculously hot I have to run the AC in my car in the winter, Abeerforbreakfast and I venture inside and meet….

A real-live actual owner...on the premises....go figure!

Matt Coggin. He kind of sneaks up on you.  Matt greets us and points to a very, very happy sign on the wall.

All this good beer in a barbecue joint...huh?? Is that a full liquor bar? I'm starting to like this place.

We looked at the menu expecting the usual…especially the usual sides…bbq baked beans (how original!), potato salad (with bacon in it!  who’d have thunk it!), but nooooo.  Matt made us eat this.

Screw the diet!

Let me tell you about this fried heap of sin.  This is a plate of fried pickles, fried battered bacon with a buttermilk garlic dip.  Let me ask you a question.  “When’s the last time you put food in your mouth that actually made you laugh out loud because it was so damned good? When?” I ask you.  When?”  Well for me, it was last night after the first bite of the pickle.  This dish was outrageous and I’m not sure it’s actually legal in the bible belt. This was a smash in the mouth of explosive flavor.  The tartness of the pickle, the batter, the dip…just riduculous.  Most of it went in here.

Guess who likes Matt's eats?

Okay, I think to myself.  Anybody can do one “outside of the box” dish.  “What else ya got Matt?” I asked, thinking he’d come up empty, or offer up his chopped pork sandwich.  Hell no.  Matt pulled a Sunday Haymaker with this…

Really, really friggin' good

“What the hell is that, Matt?”

“That’s Texas creamed corn. My own signature dish.”  This dish was insane.  Who is this Matt guy anyway.  What’s in there?

Try this on for size.  Grilled corn, cut from the cob.  Sauteed butter, heavy cream, parmesan cheese, and a mayonaise, cayene pepper lime mixture, garnished with a lime.  I can’t even begin to describe this head on collision of flavors. I’m one hell of a cook and I don’t have anything in my bag that comes close to this.  Here’s how it disappears…DSC_0185Yup, you can get your pulled pork sandwich here…no doubt it’s outrageous, but of course Matt has to one-up me again. His specialty is Texas Beef Brisket. Yes, brisket.  The most unforgiving piece of meat you can put on a grill and I don’t know more than three people that can do it right East of the Missippi.  Here’s what you missed by not eating there last night.

Now that's a sandwich! Wash it down with a Sweetwater 420. That's living large!

DBA Barbecue has a blues theme, it’s family friendly…at least until the neighbors take it over and the food is stoopid good.  Their official kick-off is the July 4th weekend…music, beer, yada yada…you know the drill.  I’ve never met Matt before last night, nor had I met his hot Mom Lee. She decorated the place.  I assure you Matt and Lee and I will meet again.  Shortly.

Hot-Mamma by the Wall of Blues. The locals are in red.

I’ve got a little advice for you.  Hit this place before the word gets out. Tell ‘em Abeerforbreakfast sent you.  You won’t get anything for telling them that. Eating there felt a little getting to see a future Hall of Famer when they’re still in the minors.  DBA’s going to be around for a long time.

Oh, the Demi Moore thing. True.  She ate there yesterday afternoon.  I found her used napkin on the floor and I’m putting it on e-bay unless someone here wants to buy it.  Did I mention the raw bar?  Enough already!

Nice job Matt!

Cheers,

Jim
