Big Ol’ Redneck Hot-tub Container Garden Saga Continues

The Big Ol Redneck Hot-tub Container Garden is coming along just fine.

About two weeks ago, I turned this…

into this…

I’ve been watching it vigilantly, paying particular attention to the drainage situation since Atlanta has been officially declared a rain forest. If the water wasn’t draining properly I’d have a mud pond.  Instead, two weeks later, I have this….

Indulge me for a moment to explain the rain forest comment.  Atlanta’s been in a severe drought situation for the past three years.  Last fall, our state legislators actually took the vote to the floor to decide if we were going to go to war with Tennessee over water from the Tennessee River.  (I’m not making this up.)  Personally, I think we could kick their asses.  I wanted to go to war with them.

Our primary source for drinking water comes from Lake Lanier.  It’s been below healthy levels for years.  That problem is exacerbated by the fact that the geniuses at the Army Corp of Engineers drain about a billion gallons a minute from the Lake so that Florida and Alabama can have their fair share of our water.

Since December, we have had enough rain in Atlanta for Lake Lanier to rise 14.56′. That’s 14.56 FEET in five months! That’s about an inch a day for those of you who are counting.  I actually found him in my backyard yesterday.

I like Atlanta rain forest. I move to your backyard.

Will someone please ask Governor Sonny Perdue to stop praying for rain for a few days.  We get it Sonny.  Not only can you keep us from buying beer on Sundays, but you can actually make it rain.  Oz’s got nothing on you man!

Back to the garden.  Here’s a closer look at my crop.

Soon, there’s gonna be a big-ass load of veggies in this tub, and in the winter I’m gonna turn it into a backyard patio fire pit! I’m going to make every effort to keep this garden completely organic…not exactly sure how to do that, and I’d welcome any suggestions. I think I may be challenged to balance soil that is supporting both cucumbers and tomatos.  We’ll see how it turns out.
